The Ontario government has approved three new Ontario health teams in northeastern Ontario that will better connect people to care in their community.
In a news release Thursday, the province said Ontario health teams ensure people can move between health-care providers more easily with one patient record and one plan that follows them wherever they go.
The three new Ontario health teams are located in Cochrane (serving Chapleau, Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Hearst, Hornepayne, Missinabie, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, and Timmins); Sudbury (serving Greater Sudbury and Sudbury East, Espanola, Manitoulin, Elliot Lake, and surrounding areas); and, Timiskaming (serving the Timiskaming…

Experts call for a collection of racial and Indigenous identity in health care
A group of experts says all provinces and territories should collect data on racial and Indigenous identity to help address inequities in care, and the best way to do that is when someone applies for a health card or renews it.
Doctor Andrew Pinto, lead author of a commentary published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, says Black and Indigenous patients have less access to care.
He says allowing them to voluntarily provide identity data could help track racism in the health-care system.
Pinto, who is founder of the non-profit Upstream Lab at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, says…

Ford government to open clinic at site of shuttered Minden ER
After weeks of pressure over the recent closure of a hospital emergency department in Minden with the busy summer cottage season approaching, the Ontario government says it will fund an urgent care clinic on the premises — but without doctors.
The plan is to have the clinic open on weekends starting June 30, and staffed by nurse practitioners and nurses, Health Minister Sylvia Jones said in a statement Tuesday.
Emergency cases will still have to make the 25-minute trip to the nearest hospital emergency room in Haliburton, which local residents have warned could result in life-threatening delays in care.
“We…
