Teaching Braille in PE – PHE America

Each school year, I teach a unit called “Abilities Awareness”. Making students aware of each other’s different abilities helps us become better citizens and leads to a more positive and inclusive school climate. This awareness leads to empathy and a deeper understanding of our peers’ individual learning needs resulting in a sense of belonging, community, and value in our school community. This unit is also an opportunity to address misconceptions surrounding different disabilities. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.” Sight Reading BrailleThis year, I wanted…

Ford’s health-care risk cuts the lives of society’s most vulnerable

A 6-year-old child ends up in the emergency room with meningitis, following days of concern by her parents about her fever and rash. A pregnant woman avoids seeing a health provider until she goes into labour, all the while worrying that she is risking her life and that of her baby. A young man falls off a roof while doing repairs, but bears the pain and waits to seek care until his injured leg becomes infected. You may be surprised to hear such things could happen in Ontario, in a country that prides itself on its universal health-care system. But…

A Conservative Blueprint for Universal Healthcare

I recently read “A Republican Argument for Affordable Universal Healthcare” in MedPage Today. While it is pleasing to see that some Republicans agree that universal healthcare is a laudable goal, it is disconcerting that conservative policymakers still lack a clear vision and framework for how to achieve that ideal. Fortunately, the conservative principles of private industry, personal responsibility, and limited government can be applied to health insurance. Reformers in other countries such as Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Singapore have provided clear examples of how to achieve, what I would consider to be, a Republican vision of a universal healthcare…

Healthcare Encryption Exceptions? – Rickard & Associates

We know that all emails and text messages that contain protected health information (PHI) should be encrypted. We can help you stay on top of the latest news that affects your everyday life. Subscribe to stay up to date. (To subscribe to our blog click here). Are there any exceptions to the encryption rule? Just one. Patients can communicate with covered entities using unencrypted email and text messages, if the patients have been informed of the increased risk. Patients can opt to have reminders sent via text messages or emails. One issue that many healthcare providers have regarding encryption, is…

Ontario extended medical care coverage to uninsured patients during a pandemic, but that’s ending

Rose Celeste of Toronto says she spent years avoiding a visit to the doctor. As an undocumented migrant worker from the Philippines, she fears something as simple as a checkup could lead to a run-in with the law and jeopardize her life in Canada. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit three years ago, that changed. The province directed hospitals to temporarily provide medically necessary care to patients without coverage while reimbursing them for the expense — something that led Celeste, 61, to discover and then treat her thyroid cancer. Without the program, she estimates she’d be thousands of dollars in…

Do I need travel insurance when traveling within Canada?

While the majority of Canadians recognize the significance of obtaining travel coverage such as cancellation and medical insurance for trips outside the country, many fail to acknowledge the need for medical insurance when traveling within Canada. In certain circumstances, failing to purchase medical insurance for domestic travel could come with consequences. The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) recommends that travelers consider purchasing travel protection. Here’s why. Not All Medical Expenses Are Covered By OHIP I’m sure if you asked, most Canadians assume that their provincial health coverage, such as OHIP for Ontarians, will cover any unexpected medical costs that…

Benefits of Saunas after Workouts

Saunas are wonderful for many reasons but in this post I want to focus on sauna benefits for those of you working out. Before I jump into the benefits of saunas after workouts, I want all of you to understand that more is not always better. Be careful when doing saunas after workouts. Limit sauna time to no longer than 20 minutes to avoid over-exerting your body. If you have never used a sauna before or are new to saunas, start with shorter periods of time. Listen to your body, it will tell you if you’re spending too long in…
