A steady diet of late night pizza, binge-drinking and sugary breakfast cereals is the norm for many post-secondary students, and new research suggests the lifestyle can cause harm that goes beyond gaining the proverbial freshman 15.
A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Preventative Medicine Reports by a group of international researchers has found post-secondary students with unhealthy eating habits can go on to suffer from disease and mental health issues for years to come.
The research team examined nearly 12,000 medical students from 31 universities across China. 50.1 per cent of study participants had unhealthy eating habits—including eating…

June 1, 2023 · 7:00 AM

Salt has long been seen as enemy number one for people with heart problems, with doctors telling patients to cut down on the amount of sodium they consume.
But new research suggests that restricting salt too much may actually raise the risk of an early death in heart failure patients.
Their work builds upon a growing body of research that posits the benefits of cutting out salt to this subset of patients may be overblown.
And the findings could mean a more exciting diet for more than six million Americans with heart…

How healthy is a vegan mom’s breast milk?
Vegan moms can breastfeed their children and not worry that their breast milk is missing essential nutrients, a new study finds.
Researchers from Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands tested the milk of vegan mothers, finding it contains sufficient levels of vitamin B2 and carnitine.
“The maternal diet greatly influences the nutritional composition of human milk, which is important for child development. With the research of vegan diets worldwide, also by lactating mothers, there are concerns about the nutritional adequacy of their milk,” said lead researcher Dr. Hannah Juncker.

Three teachers’ unions and a prominent youth advocacy group are urging the provincial government to bolster mental health literacy in the education curriculum and invest in additional school support workers.
In a joint letter issued to Education Minister Stephen Lecce on Monday, the groups also called on the government to include mental health or behavioral reasons as an excused absence under the Education Act. Currently, the act allows for “sickness or unavoidable causes,” but does not explicitly mention mental health.
The letter, signed by a total of nine organizations, comes amid a rising mental health crisis among Canadian youth and…
Carleton Place bets on unique one-stop-shop health center in bid to draw doctors
At first, Peter Hamer thought the empty lot in Carleton Place, Ont., was destined to become a standard medical clinic.
With an estimated 4,000 residents in the area without a family doctor, the project would help address a need.
But as the work progressed, Hamer began to see the outline of “something much more interesting.”
“Instead of just bringing doctors in one building, we also want to bring in other health service providers,” said Hamer, the executive director of the Ottawa Valley Family Health Team.
“All the ancillary health service providers that are in the geographic area under one roof.”…
