A diet that is rich in seafood, fruit, vegetables, nuts and olive oil may lower the risk of dementia, a new study suggests.
An analysis of data from more than 60,000 seniors revealed that choosing to follow a Mediterranean diet reduces a person’s likelihood of developing dementia by nearly one quarter published, even among those with genes that put that at greater risk, according to the report Monday in the medical journal BMC Medicine.
“The main take home message from this study is that, even for individuals with a higher genetic risk, consuming a more Mediterranean-like diet could reduce the…

‘I don’t want to be on insulin’: Concerns rise over increase in diabetes in Alberta
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting people living in Canada and diagnoses continue to be on the rise. In Alberta, an expert panel is now working on ways to lower the risk of severe outcomes and the strain on the health-care system in the years ahead.
Like many people, Grace Oben started working from home during the pandemic. The Calgary life coach gained more than 60 pounds.
On her doctor’s advice, Oben dropped the pops and processed food from her diet and started exercising every day.
“It was difficult because it was something that I wasn’t…
Alberta wildfires: Experts address long-term mental, physical impacts of smoke
Summer in Alberta: another day, another smoke-filled sky.
A shift in wind direction pushed smoke from the wildfires in northern Alberta — near High Level and Fort Chipewyan — and the Northwest Territories south into central and southern Alberta.
“The bulk of the ongoing wildfire activity in our region is in the northern extreme of the province,” said Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
He said there’s been quite a bit of fire activity and the wind shift transported the smoke south.
“It’s widespread across the province as of today,” Shelley said Friday.
He said wind…

The hospital reflects positively on year of achievements in the annual report, but says the funding gap remains an ongoing issue
Southlake Regional Health Center remains optimistic about its past year despite ongoing fiscal challenges that include an approximately $9.55-million deficit.
The fiscal numbers were released as part of its 2022-23 annual report July 13. The report highlighted many of the hospital’s successes but showed a gap between expenses and funding in the hospital’s $555-million budget for the year.
After having a slight surplus in 2021-22, treasurer Diana Brouwer reported that the loss of one-time funding put the hospital back…

Community health workers say recently announced plans for a new nursing home geared toward Black seniors should inspire a network within the Nova Scotia health-care system that is better attuned to the needs of Black people.

“We heard from Black people who would talk about the need for care that understands their skin, their hair – care that is respectful of them and responsive to the impact of the trauma…

How many hours of shuteye is best? Here’s what the latest science says about sleep
With the release of two studies that try to untangle the relationship between sleep and brain health, specialists are offering some reassurance for anyone who’s feeling anxious about optimizing their shuteye.
New research published Monday suggests that getting less than the recommended seven or eight hours of sleep each night might not be as harmful as expected for some people’s brains.
That follows a study printed last week that suggests daytime napping could have some positive effects.
But sleep science is still a relatively new field, with much more research still to be done on how sleep patterns intersect with…
