British Columbia is spending $3 million to expand a program that partners health-care workers with police in mobile teams to respond to mental health-related calls.
Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said Monday that the program aims to connect people in crisis to the appropriate services in their community, while taking pressure off stretched police resources.
“Currently, police have been the default first responders for people in the event of a mental health crisis and we know that in most cases, police-only involvement is not the most appropriate response,” he said.
“More importantly, having police-only involvement can help contribute to the…

Premiers to discuss infrastructure, public safety, affordability and health care recruitment at upcoming meetings

Provinces and territories are no longer squarely focused on demanding more funding from the federal government for health care, said Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson. Canada’s premiers will meet in Winnipeg this week.JOHN WOODS/The Canadian Press
Editor’s note: A previous story said all provinces have accepted the federal government’s health care funding, but Quebec has not.
Canada’s premiers will meet in Winnipeg this week with a focus on issues such as infrastructure, public safety and affordability, but without the aggressive push for more health care funding that dominated last year’s talks.
Instead, the 13 premiers attending…

Manitoba bringing care workers from Philippines
A recruitment mission to bring Filipino nurses and health care aids to Manitoba is being touted as an ‘overwhelming success’ by the provincial government, though some say it’s too early to celebrate.
The province says it’s received more than 300 letters from health care workers in the Philippines, accepting job offers in Manitoba’s health-care system. This is the result of a push earlier this year that saw a delegation of Manitoba health care leaders go on a recruitment mission to the Philippines.
“Their goal was to attract registered nurses, licensed practical nurse equivalents and health care aids to come and…
Experts call for a collection of racial and Indigenous identity in health care
A group of experts says all provinces and territories should collect data on racial and Indigenous identity to help address inequities in care, and the best way to do that is when someone applies for a health card or renews it.
Doctor Andrew Pinto, lead author of a commentary published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, says Black and Indigenous patients have less access to care.
He says allowing them to voluntarily provide identity data could help track racism in the health-care system.
Pinto, who is founder of the non-profit Upstream Lab at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, says…
US bishops to consider banning transgender care at all American Catholic hospitals
The US Catholic bishops will vote at their spring assembly this week on whether to amend their official directives for American Catholic health care institutions to mandate that Catholic facilities not provide gender-affirming medical treatment to transgender patients.
The vote, scheduled for one of the bishops’ two public sessions during their June 15-16 meeting in Orlando, Florida, could mark the beginning of a substantial change in the provision of health care in Catholic hospitals, clinics and facilities across the US
If, the measure would authorize the bishops’ doctrine committee to begin the process of revising the Religious and Ethical Directives…
