Alberta has promised $200 million in funding for post-secondary health-care programs as part of its latest budget.
Health Minister Jason Copping said in a news conference Monday at the University of Alberta in Edmonton that the funding would help train an additional 3,400 health-care professionals.
“Our ability to recruit and retain doctors is a top priority for our government,” Copping said. “One of the best ways to do this is to make sure that there are more opportunities for Albertans to train and work closer to where they live.”

Opinion: Will a crackdown on private telemedicine improve health care access? The jury is out
Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said on Friday that Ottawa was clawing back $82.5-million from health transfers to the provinces for allowing for-profit companies to charge for medically necessary health services, mostly diagnostic services such as MRIs and CT scans.
More importantly, the minister served notice that, going forward, there would also be a crackdown on private companies offering telehealth services.
“It is critical that access to medically necessary services, whether provided in person or virtually, remains based on medical need and free of charge,” Mr. Duclos told reporters.
The key word in that sentence is “access” and it was…

Why did I use sweet potatoes in these recipes? Sweet potatoes are a versatile vegetable that can be incorporated into many dishes, and American sweet potatoes bring healthy nutrients and flavors to meals. As a result, American sweet potatoes are more readily available and Canadians can find them year-round…
Teamsters call off strike at trucking company with KC ties after deal to keep benefits
Teamsters from Yellow Corporation announced Monday that The Central States Health and Welfare fund will extend health care benefits for workers at the trucking company, at least temporarily averting a strike, according to a press release from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Union members had planned to strike starting midnight on Sunday due to the companies’ plans to end health care and retirement benefits for workers and their families.
On Friday, The Star reported a federal judge in Kansas ruled in favor of the Teamsters, saying they had a right to strike as part of their labor dispute.
The Central…
