From NPR:
The average life expectancy for Americans is shortened by over seven months [in 2021]according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That decrease follows an already big decline of 1.8 years in 2020. As a result, the expected life span of someone born in the US is now 76.4 years — the shortest it has been in nearly two decades.
But we still have the best healthcare system in the world, right? Not if you judge it by life expectancy. From Health System Tracker:

Nova Scotia’s two health authorities plan to drop COVID-19 masking requirements in some areas of their facilities this week, though masks will still be required in high-risk spaces.

Nova Scotia Health spokesperson Jennifer Lewandowski said in a statement that this was an “evaluated response to where we are as an organization and what’s happening in the community from a COVID-19 perspective.”
“While COVID-19 continues to circulate, COVID-19 activity has continued to decline with fewer hospitals and outbreaks and fewer health-care staff off work due to COVID-19,”…

Quinoa Beet Salad – JennifersKitchen
Let me be very clear. I do not like beets. I’ve spent over fifty years disliking beets.
I’ve tried them boiled (gag-inducing), roasted (almost tolerable, but no), raw (the additional chewing required just prolongs the misery), and picked (where’s the bathroom?).
To me, beets taste like garden dirt laced with a little bit of sugar. Interestingly, there is validity to that perception. Beets contain a naturally-occurring compound called geosmin, and geosmin gives beets their dirt-like . . . er. . . earthy flavour.

I’m not one of them.
Just as interesting – at least…

The company responsible for building Montreal’s REM light rail has violated multiple health and safety regulations during the construction of the railway that put workers at risk, according to reports issued by Quebec’s occupational health and safety commission (CNESST).
The FTQ union representing construction workers says there have been concerns since the beginning of the project, which was contracted to construction and engineering firm NouvLR in 2018.
“It’s been so many years that we’ve been fighting with those issues with the CNESST and they’ve been on job sites, but many times the employer just didn’t listen,” FTQ general manager Eric…
