How healthy is a vegan mom’s breast milk?
Vegan moms can breastfeed their children and not worry that their breast milk is missing essential nutrients, a new study finds.
Researchers from Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands tested the milk of vegan mothers, finding it contains sufficient levels of vitamin B2 and carnitine.
“The maternal diet greatly influences the nutritional composition of human milk, which is important for child development. With the research of vegan diets worldwide, also by lactating mothers, there are concerns about the nutritional adequacy of their milk,” said lead researcher Dr. Hannah Juncker.

Nebraska Governor Signs Combined Anti-Trans, Anti-Abortion Bill Into Law
As expected, Republican Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed a bill Monday that both limits gender-affirming care for young people and outlaws abortion at 12 weeks of pregnancy.
The abortion ban goes into effect immediately, and the restrictions on transgender health care for people under age 19 take effect Oct. 1. Unlike in most states, Nebraska law considers everyone in that age group to be a minor.
“Today is a historic day in the State of Nebraska. It is a day where we are standing up and protecting our children so that they can have a better and brighter future,” Pillen…
Health workers slam newly privatized Alberta hospital cafeterias over empty shelves, quality
Some health-care workers say the privatization of hospital cafeterias in Calgary and Edmonton has led to empty shelves, higher prices and a dramatic degradation in the quality of the food available to patients, staff and visitors.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) contracted vendors to run the food retail service at hospitals in both cities last year and the outsourcing of those operations has taken place over the last few months.
“Everything seems to be fatty, carb-y, and just congealed,” said Dr. Stephanie Cooper, an obstetrician who works at Foothills Medical Centre.
AHS is acknowledging that it has received complaints and says…

In addition, probiotics can enhance nutrient absorption, may help break down lactose, strengthen your immune system, and possibly even help treat IBS, notes Harvard Health Publishing. Adams recommends that people eat good sources of probiotics, such as low-fat yogurt or kefir, on a daily basis.
In addition to probiotics, prebiotics can help your digestion as…

Canada’s health insurance industry has a fossil fuel contradiction
Canada is home to two of the largest life and health insurance companies in the world – Sun Life and Manulife. Now expanding into Asia, these are Canadian success stories.
