RALEIGH, NC
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A Medicaid expansion deal in North Carolina received final legislative approval on Thursday, ending a decade of debate over whether the closely politically divided state should accept the federal government’s coverage for hundreds of thousands of low-income adults.
North Carolina is one of several Republican-led states that have begun considering expanding Medicaid after years of steady opposition. Voters in South Dakota approved expansion in a referendum in November. And in Alabama, advocates are urging lawmakers to take advantage of federal incentives to expand Medicaid in order to provide health insurance to thousands of low-income…

How to shop for new insurance if you lose Medicaid coverage
Medicaid coverage will end for millions of Americans in the coming months, and it will push many into unfamiliar territory: the health insurance marketplace. Video above: Advocates push for renewal of New Hampshire’s expanded Medicaid program States will start cutting people from the government-funded plans when they no longer qualify based on income, a process that has been paused since shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The timing of these cuts will vary. But all states have insurance markets where people who lose Medicaid can buy new coverage with help from subsidies. Some states will even connect shoppers with a…
South Korea’s national health insurance has no public control
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said South Korea’s national health insurance is highly unique after a discussion with the Ministry of Economy and Finance last month. The OECD pointed out that the items and increasing rates of health insurance-related items, which require tax money, are controlled by governments and national assemblies in most of OECD’s advanced member countries. In contrast, South Korea’s health insurance is not subject to such external control.
In particular, the OECD viewed it problematic that the government budget is ‘automatically’ input when the South Korean government cannot monitor health insurance-related expenses and set…

‘It’s a Call to Arms for All of Us’ (EXCLUSIVE)
On July 13, as SAG-AFTRA leadership declared the union was going on strike, SAG-AFTRA Foundation president Courtney B. Vance and executive director Cyd Wilson drafted a letter to 2,700 of the union’s highest-earning actors outlining the financial need that many would face in the work stoppage.
“Having been through this during COVID and having such a great response from our own membership to take care of their own, when the strike was decided, Courtney and I sat down with our team and said, ‘Here we go again,’” Wilson tells Variety.

Joe Lieberman Weighs the Trump Risk
Joe Lieberman wants to make one thing clear. “The last thing I’d ever want to be part of,” the former Connecticut senator and onetime vice-presidential nominee told me by phone last week, “is bringing Donald Trump back to the Oval Office.”
Democrats have their doubts. Lieberman and his former party have been warring for years, ever since he won a fourth Senate term, in 2006, as an independent after Connecticut Democrats dumped him in a primary. Suddenly liberated, Lieberman endorsed the Republican John McCain over Barack Obama in 2008 and proceeded to tank the Democrats’ dreams of enacting a public…
Beyond cash: California repairs task force’s report stuffed with goodies
Paying cash to descendants of enslaved people is just the beginning of the California Reparations Task Force’s ambitious progressive vision.
Embedded in the panel’s 1,100-page report is a veritable leftist to-do list that includes: universal health insurance for Black residents, a guaranteed basic income, free college tuition, “forgivable” interest-free loans to small businesses and erasing interest debt on unpaid child support.
That’s not all. The report now before the state Legislature also recommends ending policing of nuisance violations such as public urination, allowing Black LGBTQ youth to receive confidential “mental health care” without parental permission, and adopting “rent caps” in…
