We just got out of our open enrollment period at The Tribune, and I wasn’t especially happy with what I saw this year.
To The Tribune’s credit, our health insurance plan premiums didn’t rise. But everything else was bad news. You see, the deductible rose significantly — by 66% year-over-year. And just as bad, the amount of each procedure our insurance would pay for dropped by 10 percentage points, nearly across the board. Not great, Bob.
I tell you this is not to try to garner sympathy, but out of empathy for you all. It turned out most Americans, like…

Senior physician warns of a crisis in one of BC’s busiest ERs
The most senior emergency physician at one of British Columbia’s busiest hospitals has come forward to warn the public about the ongoing crisis inside the emergency department, saying the situation has deteriorated to the point where some patients are waiting as many as three days to be admitted to other wards.
Dr. Urbain Ip said the understaffing and overcrowding problems in the emergency room at Surrey Memorial Hospital have him and his colleagues regularly going home “worried sick” about their patients.
“Right now, if my loved one got sick, I’m not sure if I would send [them] to my hospital…

A report on Prince Edward Island’s ailing health-care system says the province needs about 1,200 additional workers over the next 10 years.
The report by Halifax-based health-care consulting firm Health Intelligence says the province will need 1,194 more workers across all health disciplines by 2032.
Health Intelligence says its forecast is based on the province’s plan to reform the health-system by adding more nurses, doctors and pharmacists to the network.
It says the province would only need 245 more health workers over the same period should the government implement a less…

May 16, 2023 – This is the third piece in our series on private equity investment in health care — which explores why conducting due diligence in a health care purchase requires special attention, particularly for private equity firms entering the sector for the first time. The first piece focused on compliance precautions and the second focused on enforcement trends.
This piece details the questions that should be asked to uncover compliance concerns and the red flags that should give a private equity investor in health care pause. If private equity moves too quickly to turn a profit, fundamental regulatory…
Ford government’s law allows more surgery in private clinics
Premier Doug Ford’s government has passed health-care reforms aimed at easing wait-lists by clearing the way for more publicly funded surgeries and procedures in private clinics — a move critics say will sabotage medicare.
Called the Your Health Act, the bill introduced to controversy in January allows more for-profit clinics to provide cataract and other surgeons, as well as diagnostic tests including CT scans and MRIs, all paid for by OHIP.
“This is about getting rid of the backlog, making sure we help people get well again,” Ford said Monday, as the opposition parties charged with the new law will…
