A new report from the Canadian Medical Association Journal painted a stark picture of what could be the future of the country’s emergency departments, as staffing shortages and patient surges put a strain on medical resources.
The report published Monday said the summer season will likely be a “precarious and exhausting month” for health-care workers in emergency departments, with impacts ranging from long wait-times to hospital closures.
In recent years, hospital resources have been especially strained due to waves of long-COVID cases, respiratory illnesses and an influenza epidemic. However, physicians say Canada’s health-care system has been in a crisis for…

Vancouver urgent care clinic suspends some services over legal battle with health authorities
The day before Vancouver’s first urgent and primary care center opened in 2018, the provincial government held a news conference celebrating the facility as a step toward improving the quality of health-care in the city.
“We want people to get the care they need in their community,” Health Minister Adrian Dix said that Sunday.
Less than five years later, that relationship has soured.
The clinic is deep into a legal battle that it says has ultimately forced doctors to stop providing patients with ultrasounds, X-rays and other critical diagnostic tests, despite having the equipment to do so in-house.
“Unfortunately, when…

But new research suggests that restricting salt too much may actually raise the risk of an early death in heart failure patients.
