Officials in Chicopee, Massachusetts are working to recover money the city paid for health insurance premiums for municipal employees who had retired and in some cases died.
While acknowledging the data review is not finished, Chicopee Mayor John Vieau said the financial loss is expected to be less than 1 percent of the $15 million budgeted for health and dental insurance premiums and much of it will likely be returned to the city by the insurance carriers.
At a City Hall news conference, he told reporters the erroneous payments were not a result of corruption or illegal activity.

30,000 people will lose health insurance next month as Colorado shuts down Friday Health Plans. Here’s what’s next.
Friday Health Plans started in Colorado in 2015 with hopes of revolutionizing the health insurance market. Nearly a decade later, the company has imploded, leaving tens of thousands of people scrambling to find new health insurance in Colorado and beyond.
State regulators in Colorado are moving to “liquidate” the company, meaning its assets will be divided up and the business closed. As a result, all of Friday Health’s plans in Colorado will end on Aug. 31 — affecting roughly 30,000 customers here.
The company was already set to close, seeming to collapse after an over-aggressive expansion. But state regulators decided…

Restaurants charging extra for water, bread and workers’ health plan
A Los Angeles restaurant has come under fire after a prominent podcaster took issue with an unfamiliar surcharge on his guest check: an extra 4% fee automatically added to the bill to help fund the workers’ health insurance.
While Alimento, the restaurant in the Silver Lake neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, was singled out for the move, eateries across the US are increasingly upcharging diners beyond the stated food prices on menus. One in six restaurants said they are adding fees or surcharges to checks to combat higher costs, according to an August survey from the National Restaurant Association.

Effective communication builds stronger relationships, and that’s no different when it comes to health insurance plans and their members. Thoughtful and proactive engagement has always been a reliable way to get members to take action on their health and help close gaps in health equity, but it’s now a “must-have” instead of a “nice-to-have.”

Aviva added more than 100,000 private health insurance customers in a year as the NHS struggled
Insurance firm Aviva has reported a 25% increase in the number of new health insurance policies taken out in the first three months of this year – as the NHS lists were lengthened and staff went on strike.
The Aviva boss was explicit in linking the rise in new policies to failings in the public health service.
The increase is “a consequence of what we’re seeing in the NHS and customers basically say that if they can take control over their health situation then they will,” chief executive Amanda Blanc said.
More individuals and companies are “attracted to the benefits…
