Preferred Region
How does this work?
The province has answered a Brampton man’s call for better menu options at Long-Term Care Homes in Mississauga, Brampton and across Ontario.
Murray Woodcock is a resident at Extendicare Brampton and president of the Residents’ Council at the Long Term Care Home (LTCH) who has been putting pressure on the province to expand options and bring more variety to the food served at home.
On Friday the province announced it was doing exactly that with a $32 million investment to ensure residents are provided with more individualized food choices, more fresh produce and local…

Quaker Valley School District officials believe they have the best food service director in the state, and the School Nutrition Association of Pennsylvania agrees.

Escribano, a registered dietitian, joined Quaker Valley in 2018 after serving as a clinical dietitian at Villa St. Joseph.

Michelle Obama launches a food and drink company to promote healthy options for kids
Former first lady Michelle Obama has co-founded the food and drink company PLEZi, designed to provide healthy options for kids, she announced Wednesday.
Obama said he’d be working behind the scenes to guide PLEZi’s mission, which serves as an extension of the Let’s Move! campaign to fight childhood obesity that she launched as first lady.
“I’ve learned that on this issue, if you want to change the game, you can’t just work from the outside. You’ve got to get inside — you’ve got to find ways to change the food and beverage industry himself,” Obama said during the company announcement…

In Colorado, one in nine children faces hunger, and nearly half of households receiving SNAP benefits have children, according to Feeding America. In 2018, a group of passionate citizens decided to address this self-statistical head-on. Through grassroots campaigning and door-to-door canvassing, they got a measure in November 2018 ballot to establish a fund for healthy food access and food education for low-income, underserved Denver youth.
Ordinance 302 passed with 59 percent of the vote. It increased sales and use tax within the City and County of Denver by 0.08 percent for ten years and established the Healthy Food for Denver…
Americans Find Cost of Food Biggest Barrier to a Healthy Diet, Survey Finds
In a survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, almost half of the respondents cited the cost of food as the biggest obstacle to following a healthy diet.
In addition, the survey found that one in 10 Americans consider fast food the most heart-healthy diet, with parents twice as likely to opt for a fast food diet than non-parents.
I do feel that people are unfamiliar with what a Mediterranean diet entails, therefore, it may not be considered healthy due to a lack of understanding.– Julia Zumpano, registered dietitian, Cleveland Clinic

Healthy Food Ads Don’t Make People Happy; Junk Food Ads Do
Ever wondered why you delight in TV commercials showing junk foods compared to those featuring healthy meals and diets? A new study found that the former triggers positive emotions compared to the latter.
The University of Michigan researchers recently published their study on how the two types of food ads affect the feelings of viewers, particularly their food-related emotional expectations.
They found that commercial shots of juicy burgers, chicken nuggets and creamy milkshakes increased the beliefs of viewers that they would feel positive emotions when they ate those types of foods.
On the other hand, there is no evidence that…
