LIV Golf version of Phil Mickelson lost weight. He also lost his huge, adoring crowds at Masters.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Phil Mickelson flashed a huge smile to the crowd around the first tee at Augusta National, slapping hands with some of the patrons who had been waiting for him to arrive. There was a “Go get ’em, Phil!” here and a “Let’s go Devils” there, a nod to his Arizona State roots. And when he placed his first tee shot in the fairway, there was little more than a smattering of polite applause. For the 52-year-old Mickelson, it was a thoroughly uneventful and unusually quiet way to start his Masters. But that’s exactly what made it so…

What are the secrets to a long, healthy life? — Extension and Ag Research News

I was thinking about longevity the other day. Who doesn’t want a long, healthy life? As I sipped my coffee at church, I was thinking about a research project we are launching at North Dakota State University. I have included the online survey link with this column. My 90-plus-year-old church coffee buddy stopped by and joined us at our table. She usually comments on my column of the week. She inspires me. She lives on her own, drives herself to church and is always dressed stylishly. She’s very witty too. “How do you come up with new ideas for your…

Healthy Lifestyle Linked to Slower Memory Decline in Older Adults

The researchers found that each individual’s healthy behavior (healthy diet, regular exercise, active social contact, cognitive activity, non-smoking, and never drinking alcohol) was associated with a slower-than-average decline in memory over 10 years after accounting for other health, economic, and social factors. The strongest effect on slowing memory decline is a healthy diet, followed by cognitive activity and then physical exercise. Even those with genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease see benefits. According to a decade-long study of older adults in China, recently published in The BMJa healthy lifestyle, particularly a healthy diet, is linked to slower memory decline. The study…

The Secret to a Happy, Healthy Life

Nebojsa/Adobe Stock What makes a happy life? In some way, this feels like one of the most important questions a person can ask. To look for answers, researchers from Harvard University have been following two very different groups of men for more than 80 years—268 Harvard graduates and 456 men who grew up in inner-city Boston. This is the longest-running study ever of human life. Researchers were particularly interested in the social and psychological factors that impact health and well-being later in life. This year, the current study directors—Harvard Professor Robert Waldinger and Bryn Mawr Professor Marc Schulz—published a book,…
