Michelle Obama launches a healthy food and beverage company for kids

CNN — Former first lady Michelle Obama announced Wednesday the launch of a healthy food and beverage company she co-founded to offer parents “healthier, great-tasting products” for their children. “I’ve learned that on this issue, if you want to change the game, you can’t just work from the outside. You’ve got to get inside—you’ve got to find ways to change the food and beverage industry itself,” Obama said in a speech at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival. “I’m proud to announce the national launch of a company designed not only to provide better products, but to jumpstart…

Do consumers actually want healthy food and drink?

Junk food high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) is on the industry’s radar. In the UK, rules limiting the location of HFSS foods in shops have already come into play, and it’s expected that more junk food restrictions – including multibuy deals – are on the way. They found that commercial shots of juicy burgers, chicken nuggets and creamy milkshakes increased the beliefs of viewers that they would feel positive emotions when they ate those types of foods. South Africans have starkly unequal access to a healthy diet

South Africa has a food crisis. The food system – made up of all of the activities and actors involved in the production, processing, transportation, selling, consumption and disposal of food – produces starkly unequal access to nutritious foods. As a result, many households in the country cannot afford a healthy diet, 27% of children under five are stunted, and the prevalence of diet-related diseases is rising rapidly. The food system contributes to pollution and climate change through the use of agro-chemicals, fossil fuels for transport, processing and refrigeration, as well as unsustainable packaging. On top of this, over one-third…
