Judge temporarily blocks Major Adams from switching NYC retires to Medicare Advantage

A trial court judge has temporarily blocked Major Adams from switching retired city workers to a cost-cutting Medicare Advantage Plan. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Lyle Frank granted a temporary restraining order Thursday that, until he issues a final ruling, prevents roughly 250,000 city retirees and their dependents from losing their current health insurance. The retirees who brought the lawsuit “have shown that numerous promises were made by the City to then New York City employees and future retirees” about their coverage, according to court documents. The court found a likelihood of it ultimately ruling in their favour, and that any…

Base Salary Increases, Social and Health Insurance Caps to Rise

While changes to the base salary (not to be confused with the minimum wage) generally only impact government workers, there are some changes to social and health insurance payments that foreign firms should be aware of. What’s changed? On November 11, 2022, the National Assembly approved a resolution to increase the base salary from July 1, 2023. This would see the base salary of government employees increase from VND 1,490,000 (US$63.25) to VND 1,800,000 (US$76.41) per month. This salary represents a 20.8 percent increase over the current base salary. This was codified in Decree No. 24/2023/ND-CP dated May 14, 2023.…

French state to reduce the amount it contributes to your dental bills

France’s social security fund Assurance Maladie will directly refund less dental treatment in a bid to cut €500 million a year from its budget. Its share of dental bills will drop from the standard 70% to 60% from October 1. For people with top-up health insurance, that means their insurer will now cover 40% of treatment, up from 30%. Those providing this insurance, however, will likely pass on this extra cost to customers in the form of higher premiums, said Marie-Laure Dreyfuss, General Delegate of the Center Technique des Institutions de Prévoyance (CTIP). They are already set to invest half…

With no room to raise taxes, where will Adams find the money for his pricey union deals?

Retired city workers are understandably upset the city is changing their health insurance, forcing them into a plan with less flexibility effective September. But they shouldn’t be surprised: Something had to give. Our retirees are getting off easy — so far. Mayor Eric Adams registered the new contract last week with healthcare provider Aetna to start administering the less-generous Medicare contract in the fall, overriding Comptroller Brad Lander’s objections. Thanks to a higher federal subsidy for the new Advantage plan, as well as stricter rules for specialty visits and the like, the city expects to save $600 million a year.…

Generali appeals against health insurance premium cap in Slovenia

June 19 (SeeNews) – Italian insurer Generali has filed an appeal with Slovenia’s Supreme Court demanding that the cap on supplementary insurance premium be scrapped, local media reported. The 35.67 euro ($39.0) upper price limit for supplementary health insurance has a negative effect on the operations of the company, as it is not sufficient to cover all obligations amid the higher costs of medical services, the STA news agency quoted sources from Generali as say. Earlier this year, Slovenia’s Appeals Court dismissed an appeal by Generali, Triglav and Vzajemna against the price limit, set by the Slovenian government in mid-April.…

Many Americans Face Insurance Obstacles Over Medical Care and Bills

A majority of Americans with health insurance said they had encountered obstacles to coverage, including denied medical care, higher bills and a dearth of doctors in their plans, according to a new survey from KFF, a nonprofit health research group. As a result, some people are delayed or skipped treatment. Those who were most likely to need medical care — people who described themselves as in fair or poor health — reported more trouble; three-fourths of those receiving mental health treatment experienced problems. “The consequences of care are delayed and missed altogether because of the sheer complexity of the system…
