President of Finch Auto Group, Ryan Finch, has personally donated $5 million to St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Ont., through St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation.
It’s the largest known gift of its kind to support mental health care research in southwestern Ontario.
The donation will fund research into new solutions aimed at making it easier for patients to access mental health care and receive the help they need.
“I feel lucky to be able to give back,” said Finch. “With mental health at the forefront of so many aspects of life today, I want to make a difference and if…

Community health workers cited as unsung heroes in complex health care system
“We’re actually seeing a number of hospitals and health systems that are also engaging community health workers, but the position is really non-clinical,” Henderson said. “They are focused on addressing the whole person, so what those needs of different vulnerable populations might be, whether it’s accessing food or helping to make a connection for housing or employment or if they need a medical home, they become that care coordinator across all the social determinants of health.”
About 16,000 openings for health education specialists and community health workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade, according to the US…

Minden ER to close in 1 week, but residents say fight for ‘safe and accessible’ health care not over
An emergency department in Minden, Ont., is slated to close in one week but residents say they will keep up the pressure on the province to make sure the closure is not permanent.
“We are not statistics,” Richard Bradley, a resident, told CBC Toronto on Thursday.
“We are determined. The only statistic we want to be is the town that saves its ER. We pay the same taxes as everybody else does. We deserve and demand that we have safe and accessible health care.”
Haliburton Highlands Health Services (HHHS) announced in April that it would close the emergency department at…

He pointed to a recent letter to the local…
Ford government’s law allows more surgery in private clinics
Premier Doug Ford’s government has passed health-care reforms aimed at easing wait-lists by clearing the way for more publicly funded surgeries and procedures in private clinics — a move critics say will sabotage medicare.
Called the Your Health Act, the bill introduced to controversy in January allows more for-profit clinics to provide cataract and other surgeons, as well as diagnostic tests including CT scans and MRIs, all paid for by OHIP.
“This is about getting rid of the backlog, making sure we help people get well again,” Ford said Monday, as the opposition parties charged with the new law will…
Masking requirements in most Manitoba health-care settings to end
Masking requirements in Manitoba health-care settings will soon change according to Shared Health.
On Wednesday, Shared Health announced the need for masking will be lifted on May 10 in most health-care facilities throughout Manitoba.
“The changes in masking requirements are based on advice given by infection prevention and control experts and reflect the changes we’ve seen with virus transmission in our province over the past year,” said Monika Warren, Shared Health’s COO of provincially coordinated health services and its chief nursing officer, in a news release. “Care settings across the province will continue to be mask-friendly. Masks will be available…
